Just 22km north of
Tenterfield Boonoo Boonoo National Park offers a great variety of
scenic, natural and historic attractions for visitors. The Boonoo
Boonoo River is one of the park's most spectacular features winding
its way through high granite country, strewn with boulders and
covered by open forest. Riverside vegetation includes banksias,
melaleucas, grevillia, callitris, leptospermum and callistemon. The
landscape along the river includes bare, smooth stretches of granite,
dotted with tea tree, large pools with sandy banks lined with cypress
pine, massive boulder-strewn stretches and secluded rocky pools. A
majestic dark pool is the final attraction before the river slides
over the falls. The viewing platform gives a breathtaking view of the
falls as they roar into the gorge 210 meters below. A gully of
rainforest bathes in the moisture at the base of the falls. Access
The park is reached by taking a gravel road which leaves the
Woodenbong Road 22km north of Tenterfield. The park entrance is 4km
from the Woodenbong Road and it is a further 9km to Boonoo Boonoo
Falls. Facilities Camping and picnic areas are provided at Boonoo
Boonoo Falls and bush camping is allowed. Caravan, camping, hotel and
motel accommodation are available in Tenterfield. Wildlife Due to the
diversity of habitats a variety of animals occur, such as the Grey
Kangaroo, Wallaroo, Red-necked, Swamp and Pretty faced Wallabies. On
the track to the bottom of the Falls, the endangered Brush tailed
Rock Wallaby has been sighted. During the spring months the variety
of wildflowers and attendant wildlife will reward and most discerning
field naturalist, even on the road that traverses the park. The open
forest, heath, swamp and river environments are easily accessible to
the visitor. History
There is evidence
of gold mining which took place during the 19th century in one of the
tributaries of the Boonoo Boonoo River, at Morgan's Gully, where the
remains of sluicing and old machinery can be seen. The road to the
Boonoo Boonoo Falls, and the path down from the Falls Lookout are
associated with Banjo Paterson's courtship and marriage.
ActivitiesThe area attracts nature lovers, rock hoppers and walkers.
National Parks and Wildlife Code. The preservation and protection of
our natural areas depends on the co-operation of all who visit and
enjoy our National Parks and Nature Reserves. Here are a few simple
rules that everyone is asked to observe: Wildlife can destroy lives
and property so be careful, especially during bush fire danger
periods. Use only safe fireplaces and do not light (or use any form
of) fire during total fire ban periods.
Keep the areas
you use tidy - place rubbish in the bins provided or take it away
with you. Leave firearms at home. Leave your pets at home - they can
disturb and kill native animals and are often a nuisance to other
visitors. In particular dogs are not permitted in National Parks
throughout Australia. Do not disturb plants, animals and rocks. Rocks
are important shelter for some animals and plants. Please observe all
signs. They are provided for your guidance and to assist you to enjoy
the areas you visit.
