The Driza-Bone Story

Since 1898 the DRIZA-BONE oilskin coat has been part of Australia's history. Now it's a way of life, some even say state of mind. For over 100 years the ever-practical Driza-Bone surfaces each year in the wet, worn by man, woman & child alike.

In the 1890's, a Scottish sailor by the name of Edward Le Roy who plied the great southern oceans, discovered that the torn sails on his ship could be recycled into long coats and sou'westers, and by painting the fabric with a mixture of oils they were transformed into excellent wet weather gear.

The word on the land spread about the effectiveness of Le Roy's coats in the wet, and they were soon adopted by the colony's squatters and settlers. The coat was adapted to life on the land with a fantail to protect the seat of the horse rider's saddle, leg straps to keep the coat from taking off in high winds, and extra long sleeves to protect the wearer when his arms were extended.

So effective were the coats that they eventually became known as Driza-Bones, after the dried and parched bones of animals in the arid Australian Outback. The scientific theory that oil and water don't mix still keeps out the heaviest downpours of rain, even when you need to be outdoors for days on end. There have been certain improvements to the secret oiling process over time, but the coat's essential style, waterproof quality, and famous durability remain unchanged. Driza-Bone coats have been worn by stockmen, horse riders, international sporting teams, royalty, celebrities, as well as ordinary rural and urban people who appreciate the great outdoors.

Over the years many myths and legends have sprung up about this remarkable garment. Driza-Bone is a name synonymous with wet weather clothing and down-to-earth country values. The fame of Driza-Bone has spread internationally, the coat having gone from a work coat to one that is worn in the city as a symbol of hard-working country living, and is synonymous with Australia anywhere in the world.

Australian pride in the Driza-Bone coat has made it a favoured gift to official visitors to Australia, including royalty and more recently Madonna, who acquired a coat for her baby, Lourdes. When Muhammad Ali visited Australia for the 2000 Olympic Games, he made a special trip to Brisbane to obtain Driza-Bone coats for himself, family & friends.

Today, Driza-Bone has evolved from being solely an oilskin workcoat, to an internationally recognised brand that encompasses a wide range of coats, jackets, vests, hats and leathergoods used for both active and leisure outdoor activities. These not only reflect the heritage of Driza-Bone, but add a smart modern look to this Australian icon.

Recent additions to the range include shirts, moleskin and denim jeans, and knitwear. These items are now available at David Jones, and at leading menswear, saddlery, outdoor and Australiana outlets. For your nearest stockist freecall 1800 773 800 or visit www.drizabone.com.
