Letojanni in Sicilia

This sunny locality on the lonian coast, under the wing of Capo Sant' Alessio to the north, had no real history until 1700, when the first inhabited nucleus formed on the hill and attracted the inhabitants of the hills surrounding the nearby Vale Aurea (Today's Gallodoro).

The town later developed toward the sea and the seaside quarter prospered; in a relatively short time it became a pleasant tourist resort and in recent years one of the most well known on the Ionian coast. The mild climate, the perennially sunny beach, and the vicinity of the Agro` and Alcantra valleys for excursions have accentuated the town's tourist vocation and brought it international renown.

Greta Garbo stayed here, in an isolated villa in the green of Contrada Silemi. Letojanni was the birthplace of the illustrious surgeon Francesco Durante (1844-1934), one of the founders of Rome's Policlinico hospital, to who is dedicated a bronze bust in the nineteenth-century quarter.
