Amelia
(UMBRIA) A Brief
History
Amelia
has very ancient origins (12th
cent. b.C.).
4th
century b.C. - Amelia becomes an
important Roman municipality and
an important road junction for
military
communications.

- The Goths led by Totila sack and
destroy the town.
- 726
- Amelia is annexed by Pope Gregory II
to the Church.
- 730-740
- The Longobards of King Liutprando
occupy Amelia.
- 742
- Amelia once more falls under the rule
of the Papal State.
- 12th
century - Amelia becomes a free
commune. The town becomes the scene of
battles between the Guelphs (supporters
of the Pope) and the Ghibellines
(supporters of the
Emperor).
- 1455
- Amelia is the birthplace of Bishop
Alessandro Geraldini. He was the
confessor of Queen Isabel of Spain and
assisted Christopher Columbus in
obtaining financial aid for his
expeditions.
